FUMESCANS – The world of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is preparing to return in animated form with a longer television adaptation. Titled Sekiro: No Defeat, the project will premiere as an eight-episode TV anime in January 2027, offering more material than the theatrical version previously shown in Japan.

Sekiro: No Defeat initially appeared as an edited theatrical production that began screening in Japanese cinemas on September 4, 2026. The movie was originally presented as a limited theatrical event, but the production team has now revealed that the project was actually developed with an eight-episode television format in mind.

Instead of simply dividing the movie into separate installments, the upcoming anime will rebuild the story for television. Additional episodes, scenes, and cuts that were not included in the theatrical edition will be incorporated into the broadcast version. This means viewers who have already watched the film can still encounter new material when the series arrives.

The story takes place during Japan's Sengoku period, a time marked by warfare and political turmoil. At its center are Wolf, a skilled shinobi, and Kuro, the young Divine Heir whom he has sworn to protect.

Kuro possesses the mysterious Dragon's Heritage, a power connected to immortality. However, this extraordinary ability comes with devastating consequences, including the spread of Dragonrot. As the conflict surrounding Ashina intensifies, Wolf becomes determined to protect his master and find a way to change the fate awaiting them.

The anime is based on FromSoftware's acclaimed action-adventure game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The adaptation retains the game's historical fantasy atmosphere while translating its characters, conflicts, and supernatural elements into an animated narrative.

The transformation from a theatrical edit into an expanded television series gives Sekiro: No Defeat an opportunity to explore its narrative beyond the condensed movie format. Fans who have already experienced the film will therefore have additional content to anticipate, while newcomers can discover the story through the eight-episode version.
