FUMESCANS – Netflix is expanding its anime catalog with Snowball Earth, a sci-fi series that combines giant robots, alien creatures, and a frozen post-apocalyptic setting. The anime, which originally aired in 2026, is scheduled to reach Netflix audiences in October.

The story follows Tetsuo Yabusame, a quiet young pilot whose closest companion is Yukio, a gigantic robot. Years earlier, the pair fought alongside humanity against monstrous beings that arrived from outer space.

After a devastating confrontation, Tetsuo ends up in an escape pod and enters cryosleep. When he eventually awakens, he discovers that eight years have passed and Earth has undergone a catastrophic transformation. The planet is now covered in ice and snow, leaving Tetsuo to explore an unfamiliar world while holding on to his promise to Yukio.

Rather than presenting a conventional mecha battlefield, Snowball Earth places its characters in a world where survival has become just as important as fighting. The combination of an environmental catastrophe, mysterious enemies, and enormous machines gives the series a distinctive science-fiction atmosphere.

The series is adapted from Yuhiro Tsujitsugu's manga, which began serialization in Monthly Spirits in 2021. The English edition is published by VIZ Media.

Studio KAI handled the animation, with Munehisa Sakai serving as director. Shigeru Murakoshi worked on the series composition, while Toshiya Kono was responsible for the character designs. Takuto Yoshinaga voices Tetsuo in the Japanese cast.

The first season contains 13 episodes, and Netflix is set to make the complete season available rather than releasing it episode by episode. The series is scheduled to arrive on October 4, 2026, in the United States, Canada, and selected additional territories, although regional availability may differ.

The arrival also gives international viewers another opportunity to discover a series that originally premiered through Crunchyroll during the Spring 2026 anime season. The story will continue beyond the first season, as a second season has already received official confirmation.

At its core, Snowball Earth combines several familiar anime elements—mecha battles, alien threats, survival, and post-apocalyptic exploration—while placing them against an Earth transformed into an enormous frozen landscape.

Tetsuo's journey is also tied to his relationship with Yukio and his attempt to understand what happened to humanity during his absence. For viewers interested in science-fiction anime with giant robots but looking for a setting beyond the usual futuristic cities or space colonies, Snowball Earth offers a different environment built around a world buried beneath ice.
