FUMESCANS – The latest Japanese box-office results have given anime fans plenty to talk about, with Star Detective Precure! The Movie: The Mysterious Garden and the Secret of the Two making an impressive theatrical debut. The film entered the weekend rankings at No. 3 and simultaneously established a new opening record for the long-running Precure franchise.

The movie opened in 348 theaters across Japan on September 18. During its first three days, it attracted roughly 357,612 admissions and generated approximately 445.6 million yen in ticket revenue. Those figures were enough to surpass the previous three-day opening record held by Precure All Stars Movie F.

The strong performance did not stop with the opening weekend. Taking advantage of Japan's Silver Week holiday period, the film reached approximately 606,000 admissions and 746 million yen in cumulative box-office revenue within its first six days.

The theatrical release is based on Star Detective Precure!, the 23rd main installment in the Precure television franchise. The story features new characters including Karin, Alan, and Rain, with Akari Kito, Nobunaga Shimazaki, and Koki Uchiyama among the cast members lending their voices to the film.

Despite the strong arrival of Star Detective Precure!, the No. 1 position remained occupied by Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island. The movie entered its ninth consecutive weekend at the top of the Japanese box-office chart.

Between September 18 and 20, Chiikawa sold around 643,000 tickets and collected roughly 999 million yen. By September 23, its cumulative total had climbed to about 11.33 million admissions and 16.52 billion yen, placing it among the top 15 highest-grossing movies in Japanese box-office history.

Another anime title making headlines was Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, which returned to Japanese cinemas on September 18. The revival was not simply a standard rerelease, as audiences could also experience the movie through premium formats such as MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, and Dolby Atmos.

The film placed sixth during the weekend of its theatrical return. Before the revival began, the movie had already accumulated more than 3 billion yen in Japan from approximately 1.5 million admissions. Its renewed theatrical run helped push the title beyond that milestone.

Several other animation-related releases also appeared in the latest chart. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising moved from fourth to eighth place during its fourth weekend, while the live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's Look Back declined from fifth to tenth in its second weekend.

What Is Anime?

Anime refers to animated productions associated with Japan and its animation industry. The medium covers a wide variety of genres, including action, fantasy, comedy, romance, science fiction, mystery, and adventure.

Unlike a genre that describes a particular type of story, anime is primarily a form of animated storytelling. It can be created for television, streaming platforms, or theatrical release, with some productions adapted from manga and novels while others are developed as original works.
