FUME SCANS - Supernatural had a pretty solid premise: two brothers, a 1967 Chevy Impala, and enough American urban legends to keep the Winchester brothers busy for years.

The early seasons knew exactly how to make that setup work, transforming abandoned houses, eerie motels, and small-town folklore into genuinely frightening television.

Sam and Dean weren’t saving the universe every single week; sometimes, they were simply trying to survive whatever nightmare awaited them at their next stop.

That formula could have carried the series much further than it ultimately did. Instead, Supernatural kept raising the stakes—until Lucifer, a civil war among angels, the Apocalypse, and eventually God Himself became part of the Winchesters' problems.

The original five-season plan stretched into 15 seasons, and at a certain point, those once-terrifying creatures began to feel far less threatening. It’s hard to be afraid of a random demon when the Winchesters have spent years going toe-to-toe with cosmic entities.

This is where Netflix’s Castlevania succeeds. Trevor Belmont, Sypha, and Alucard face off against vampires, "Creatures of Night," and Dracula’s war on humanity—all without the sense of horror being lost to an endless cycle of cosmic conflict.

Even with all their power, the characters are not invincible, and the monsters remain genuinely dangerous. It is the kind of dark fantasy that Supernatural could have achieved, had it only held onto the elements that made its early seasons so compelling.

Castlevania brings monster hunting to the screen.

Based on the Konami video game series, Netflix’s Castlevania opens with a tragedy that makes Dracula’s hatred for humanity entirely understandable—even if his response is horrific.

Dracula falls in love with Lisa, a human woman who aspires to study medicine and help others. He shared his knowledge with Lisa, but their life together came to an end when a corrupt bishop had Lisa burned at the stake, accusing her of witchcraft. Upon learning what had happened, Dracula gave the people of Wallachia one year to prepare before unleashing an army of demonic creatures to slaughter them.

Putting an end to Dracula’s rampage falls to an unlikely trio: Trevor Belmont, a cynical monster hunter from a disgraced lineage; Sypha Belnades, a sharp-tongued magician; and Alucard, Dracula’s half-human son.

Their clashing personalities provide plenty of banter, while the history of the Belmont family adds a layer of monster-hunting lore that will feel familiar to fans of Sam and Dean—reminiscent of the brothers digging through old case files to uncover a creature’s weaknesses.

This is where Castlevania truly shines. The story doesn’t rely on the constant introduction of ever-greater villains to keep things engaging.

Later seasons explore shifting power struggles, rival vampire factions, and characters with vastly different visions for the world’s future. These conflicts emerge organically from the series’ dark fantasy setting, allowing the show to evolve without losing its original appeal.

Spanning four tightly-knit seasons, the series—available on Netflix—enjoys a significant advantage when it comes to storytelling.

There is a reason Supernatural managed to run for 15 seasons. Sam and Dean Winchester possessed a chemistry that made an episode about a haunted house just as entertaining as one dealing with the end of the world.

And who could forget the Impala, Dean’s poor eating habits, or the show’s willingness to lean into the truly absurd? Castlevania doesn’t attempt to replicate any of that.

Yet, there is a reason why the early seasons of Supernatural still feel distinct. The monsters feel dangerous, the folklore is compelling to explore, and even routine hunts can take a terrifying turn.

Netflix’s Castlevania captures a similar appeal within a much darker Gothic fantasy, featuring a band of misfits, plenty of pitch-black humor, and truly horrific monsters.

While this animated series has its own shortcomings, its four-season run provides enough space to tell a focused story without dragging it out for a decade.

For fans who miss the grittier, more grounded side of Supernatural, Trevor Belmont and his companions are well worth a watch—just don’t expect an Impala to show up. The closest thing you’ll get here is a massive whip.
