FUMESCANS - Every adaptation of a story can bring something different to the table. A light novel might offer the most detail and deep insight into the protagonist's perspective. An anime series might provide a more dynamic approach and a fresh take on the characters.

With manga, we often gain a better understanding of the storyboarding and how the mangaka chooses to prioritize and approach specific scenes.

In the manga Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table by BanzaiKotobukiDaienkai, the first volume demonstrates how this medium can effectively highlight character emotions, suspense, drama, and horror through expressions, poses, positioning, camera angles, and other storytelling elements.

Manga Review: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table

Yuki is a young woman experienced in "death games"—events organized by the wealthy and famous. These organizers prey on the desperate, thrusting them into lethal, near-impossible situations where only survivors receive a payout.

As the first volume begins, Yuki and five other young women wake up dressed in maid uniforms inside a mansion riddled with deadly traps. Only the winner survives to claim the prize, leading to a ruthless scenario where—despite occasional moments of mutual aid—it is ultimately a fight for survival of the fittest.

One aspect I particularly appreciate is the manga's focus on the characters' faces. BanzaiKotobukiDaienkai’s artwork places a strong emphasis on their expressions.

Given the horrors they endure and the drama they face, this allows us to grasp exactly what they are going through before even reading their dialogue. Everything is executed masterfully, and in some instances, the visuals become quite dark and gruesome, fitting the story's themes.

The composition and storyboarding demonstrate an equally high level of care and attention to detail. Camera angles during tense moments, the use of lettering and sound effects to convey intensity, costume designs, and even character poses all feel crafted to drive the story forward.

When there is a scramble for a key or a life-or-death situation, the focus shifts accordingly. Moments of panic are accompanied by dynamic fonts and chaotic lettering.

Costume designs highlight the dissonance between the horror and the notion that this is entertainment—or perhaps even fanservice for certain twisted individuals. All of this adds to the story's expressiveness.

Volume 1 of the Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table manga is already out, and Yen Press is set to release Volume 2 on December 15, 2026. The company is also handling the light novel. The anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
