FUMESCANS – AnimeJapan is preparing to give aspiring animators in Japan another opportunity to showcase their creativity through the AnimeJapan New Creator Awards 2027. Applications for the student-focused short animation competition will officially begin on October 1, 2026, with the submission period continuing until February 6, 2027.

The competition was established to discover and nurture the next generation of anime creators. Only students currently enrolled at educational institutions in Japan are eligible to participate. Both individual creators and groups can enter, while the submitted project must be a short animated work lasting from one minute to less than 15 minutes, including opening and ending credits. What Is Anime?

Anime generally refers to Japanese animated productions and encompasses a wide range of genres, including action, fantasy, romance, comedy, science fiction, mystery, and drama. Unlike the common perception that animation is primarily aimed at children, anime is produced for audiences across different age groups.

Anime can originate from manga, light novels, games, or original concepts created specifically for animation. Short films such as those accepted by the AnimeJapan New Creator Awards demonstrate how the medium can also serve as a platform for emerging creators to experiment with storytelling, visual design, and animation techniques.
