FUMESCANS – Fans of supernatural school stories have a new anime adaptation to watch for as The Failure at God School, the manga written by Natsu Hyuga, has officially been announced for television. Hyuga is also known for creating The Apothecary Diaries, while Modomu Akagawara provides the manga's artwork. A teaser visual was released alongside the announcement.

The series offers a modern interpretation of supernatural powers. Its setting is contemporary Japan, where people who possess extraordinary abilities can pursue qualifications to become gods associated with shrines. The story follows Nagi, a girl who initially believes she has no special powers at all.

Nagi's situation changes when she uses a technique designed to defend herself against her telepathic twin brother. The incident unexpectedly reveals that she possesses supernatural abilities of her own. As a result, she is sent to a specialized institution where students are trained to become future gods.

The world of the manga also treats supernatural abilities as something that can be officially regulated. People with mysterious powers are classified by the government, while specialized schools and licenses exist for those who want to use these abilities. Those who achieve the necessary certification can receive the title of God.

For Nagi, however, discovering her abilities is only the beginning. Her family shrine has been left without the divine presence it needs following her grandmother's death, while her brother's withdrawn personality makes him an unlikely solution. Her search for help eventually places her inside the very school she never expected to attend.

The original manga began running in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine in August 2021. The English edition is published by Yen Press, allowing international readers to follow Nagi's supernatural school adventure.

Hyuga expressed excitement about seeing Nagi, Takeru, Tsukuyomi, and Tota animated and given voices. Akagawara likewise shared gratitude toward the creative teams, editors, readers, and everyone involved in bringing the manga to television. Both creators also highlighted their anticipation of seeing the school's characters come alive in animated form.

The anime announcement adds another adaptation to Hyuga's growing portfolio. Meanwhile, The Apothecary Diaries itself has several projects in development, including a third anime season, an animated film, a console game, and a live-action production.
