FUME SCANS  - Author Mochimaru Sakaki discusses the series' premise in the author's notes: what if the protagonist were the only one who could see strategy guides, commentary, and the entire internet? And what if that character were essentially naive, with little understanding of the world around them?

That is precisely what we get when entering the world of The World's Strongest Mage: I Started My Free Life in a World Where Only I Can See Online Strategy Guides. Lorna was clearly never the favorite child, even before her father misinterpreted the nature of her powers.

So, Lorna uses her extraordinary abilities and... simply lives her life. She saves the world—and its inhabitants—time and again, wrapping up Volume 1 as an unknown yet omnipotent figure.

Volume 2 does manage one thing I appreciate. If you’ve ever played a game featuring timed monster attacks, you’ll appreciate the horror that has become a routine Wednesday for the residents of the port town of Aquas.

Every Wednesday, monsters appear; while this might be fine for adventurers entering the game in search of a quick power boost, it’s a nightmare for the locals.

Fortunately, Lorna manages to look past the eroge ads on the "Internet" long enough to save the town from the game mechanics by beating the system at its own rules.

After that, it’s hard to imagine what else Lorna could possibly do. Invincible, impervious to harm, and capable of teleporting and absorbing MP, Lorna is essentially an overpowered joke with no clear goal. A

t the end of Volume 2, she heads to the Royal Capital, where—perhaps—she’ll explain to someone in power that they’ve completely misunderstood the world's power rankings. Or maybe she’ll just take over everything, everywhere. Who knows?

On one hand, the novel is very relaxing to read, as it makes absolutely no demands on the reader's emotions.

On the other hand, while Lorna grows stronger and gains information, she fails to truly comprehend it. This makes the long-form light novel start to feel tedious as the second volume progresses.

To be honest, this story caters to a specific type of reader. These are not readers interested in characters who build things from scratch or address social issues by uplifting the downtrodden.

Instead, this story is for those weary of the typical world of games, monsters, and loot—people who merely watch gameplay videos and seek out guides solely to... beat the game. For such readers, I imagine The World's Strongest Witch: I'm Starting My Free Life in a World Where Only I Can See the Online Strategy Guide might feel like a breath of fresh air, or even prove entertaining.
