FUME SCAN - Harry and Meghan Markle were officially designated as private citizens after King Charles III announced a change in their status on September 7, 2026.

The couple is no longer considered "working royals"—members of the royal family who perform official duties on behalf of the monarch and receive administrative support from the Royal Household.

In 2020, Harry and Meghan left the UK and chose to step back from royal duties amidst internal family disputes. However, in August 2026, the couple returned to the UK with their two children.

A letter issued by King Charles stated that Harry and Meghan’s status was now equivalent to that of ordinary civilians and that they were no longer permitted to use the honorific styles of "His/Her Royal Highness."

The letter, issued by the Lord Chamberlain—the highest-ranking official in the Royal Household—noted that the Palace had received numerous requests for clarification following the Sussexes' return to the UK.

The letter aimed to prevent public confusion. "It is recalled that in January 2020, the Duke and Duchess stepped back from representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign and ceased to be active members of the Royal Family," the letter stated.

The letter also emphasized that any charitable activities undertaken by Harry and Meghan were private matters conducted in an individual capacity.

On September 8, it was reported that Harry and Meghan were "surprised" to receive the latest letter from King Charles. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stated that they were somewhat taken aback, as they had not been informed of the letter's contents beforehand.

Meanwhile, a royal source stated that Harry and Meghan were actually aware of the letter's contents by the Monday afternoon prior to its publication. The letter had been sent to Prince Harry’s team, government departments, military officials, and Lords-Lieutenant—officials typically involved in royal engagements.

This decision followed the return of Harry and Meghan—parents to Prince Archie (aged 7) and Princess Lilibet (aged 5)—to the UK on August 26, 2026. Their return to their homeland came six years after they stepped back from their roles as senior royals and began a new life in California.

The letter also reaffirms the Sandringham agreement reached in 2020 when the couple left the UK, which rejected a "half-in, half-out" arrangement that would have allowed them to pursue commercial interests while remaining working members of the royal family.
